SSRD sent a bundle of Ref’s,  NSO’s and merchandise queens over to Adelaide to partake, and we are only just now seeing them come back down to earth

here’s an account from Lady Malice:
Saturday was sooooo long and busy. Between the 5 of us Ref’s/NSO’s we worked, I think it was, 15 games just on Saturday with a few of us literally running between the 2 pavilions to get to our games on time. Teams were totally thrashing other teams with score differences of up to 200 points. Some of the teams playing the tournament had never bouted before including Townsille and WIRD.

The level of gameplay shown by Townsville and WIRD would be pretty similar to that of SSRD. Yep, I’m thinking travel teams next year

It was such a buzz to spend 2 days totally immersed in derby land, catching up with friends I haven’t seen for so long, all the tears and hugs shared, and buying buttloads of merch. The afterparty was a huge amount of fun with everyone getting in on the dancing.

We sold a lot of merchandise, which was particularly impressive seeings we were not a bouting League!  but then again, who could resist stuff as cool as this??

There was a fair bit of fangirl action going on…

We are soooo freakin’ excited to be heading off to this event – a whole weekend dedicated 100% to derby; everyone, everywhere, 24/7!

On the Queens birthday long weekend the Adelaide Roller Derby League will be hosting the biggest roller derby event ever held outside of the USA, can you believe it?

It’s called The Great Southern Slam and in excess of 450 skaters to participate representing 20 leagues from Australia and New Zealand in two days of non stop derby action at The Adelaide Showground.

This is sporting and cultural histroy in the making and we’d love you to be a part of it. Please check out the gorgeous website www.greatsouthernslam.com.

We’ve got a select group of representatives heading over to Adelaide as NSO’s and retailing our merchandise, spreading the word about SSRD.

Lady Malice, Mad Dazz Racin’, Hurricane Hipi, Mr Hurricane Hipi (Andrew the Great) and TiTasaurus will all be doing us proud and flying the SSRD flag high.

next year though, we will DEFINITELY be represented as a bouting League – woot!!

It was amazing to have somebody with her ability and knowledge of the sport to come and play, we thought we might do a bit of a mini interview with her and share it with all of you…

So, how long have you been skating?

I skated when I was in primary school. The cool thing to do if you didn’t go to the blue light discos was to hang out at the skate rink. I hadn’t worn skates for close to 20 years before taking up derby in October 2009.
What was it about roller derby that made you want to play?

The camaraderie and the fact it was a full contact sport. Not many sports allow women to be rough -it’s nice to be able to get some aggression out and get fit at the same time!
What league and or team are you currently in?

High City Derby Divas based in Denver, Colorado, USA
What does your derby name/number mean to you?

Because I play in America, I wanted everyone to know I’m proud of who I am and where I come from – Down Under. The Thunder part could have something to do with my booming voice, or it just sounded good. As for the number – if you are going under, it should be 69.

What’s your favourite position?

I have many positions, as our team tends to be multi talented. My fave at the moment is blocker – rear of the pack

What’s your best move/technique?

Love hammer slams and a good hip check.
What was your worst injury?

I only cause injuries so far!

Roller derby pet hate?

Being back blocked – everyone does it, but it doesn’t always get called

What’s your favourite roller derby anthem/tunes to skate to?

Thunderstruck – AC-DC and I’ve got a brand new pair of roller skates

Favourite roller derby quote?

Hmmm……………..Could it be “You’ve been THUNDER STRUCK!!” No one has actually used it, but I think that would be really cool!

Where do you plan to retire with your derby millions?

Somewhere quiet and unassuming, where no one can recognise me – just as long as it’s close to a skate rink!

We managed to hand out heaps of flyers and chat to loads of interested people from within our local community, and hopefully raised our profile just that little higher!

Misty Meaner kindly made up some logo badges for us to sell (which we did, selling all and covering the cost of the stall + some profit!) and Lady Malice made up some quickie stickers for us to also give away which was awesome.

Stay tuned for our new merch range coming soon – the Merchandising committee are working hard to bring you the good stuff asap!

We did a couple of demo skates too, which was fun.  With any luck, there will be crowds bustin’ down our doors to get tickets to our first bout later this year.  Interested?  Subscribe to our posts (over there to the right, in the sidebar) and we’ll keep you up to date!

The second freshmeat session of the current intake was a success today, with lots of promising derby girls (and refs) turning up.

There was lots of good feedback from the coaches and drills included single and double knee falls, four point falls, 180 degree knee slides, plough stops and T stops. It was recommended that everyone starts practicing their body bridges, push ups and sit ups now so they’re good and ready for the yellow star test.

For now everyone will be focusing on their derby stance, falls, stops and crossovers as the countdown to the white star test ticks down.

The new SSRD blog is up and running! We aim to bring you news and happenings at the South Sea Roller Derby league as we head towards our first bout and beyond.
